CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Sileen had an aversion to bitchy people. However, as Monday morning unraveled, she found becoming a bitch was quite easy. Even the dazzling sunshine pouring through the office window—though it felt wonderful on her back—did little to impede her spiraling spirits. The day started off good when she noted the course, the clubhouse and shop all had exceptionally good Saturday receipts paid, which was a blessing since Sunday had been a total washout.

Her day hadn’t been bad until Mark Castle, her contact at the electric company, called with some bad news. That was when her day and her spirits took a real nosedive.

She refrained from interrupting Mark with a line of curses by worrying her bottom lip. And when he finished delivering his bad news, she calmly said, “You promised to have the transformer installed this Friday.”

As he listed valid reasons for not being able to keep his word, she clutched the phone tighter. The hard plastic bit into her ear.

Sileen tapped her free hand against her thigh while she paced the small area behind her desk. “I understand the hurricane left supplies low, but you told me that they weren’t depleted by that,” she responded, pulling forth all the composure she could muster. “I understand there are priority situations and I certainly wouldn’t want anything to hinder rectifying those. All I’m asking to know is when are we guaranteed a delivery and installation?”

She listened to Mark. “Maybe the following Friday, the thirtieth?” Had he forgotten they needed to start setting up for the festival Wednesday the twenty-eighth? “The event is on Saturday, October first, Mark.”

Again she listened to Mark’s reply, and dropped her chin to her chest. Garrett might well get his wish to relocate the festival to his property, after all.

“What?” She clenched her teeth. Had she heard Mark right? He would schedule an install date for Wednesday, the twenty-eighth and a cancellation date for the thirtieth. That was the best he could do, for now.

Defeated, she sighed. “Yes. I know you’ll do your best, Mark. Please, I know how busy you are, but keep me informed. This festival is very important to our town. Thank you.” She waited until Mark hung up and then slammed the phone’s handset into its cradle. She pulled a piece of chocolate from her pocket, hoping the caffeine would help minimize the headache making her forehead tight.

“That doesn’t sound good.”

She looked up to find Hudson standing with the toe of his name-brand sneakers pushed against the wooden flooring as he leaned against the office doorjamb. She’d been so preoccupied with the phone call, she hadn’t heard the door open. “It’s not.”

His brows pulled in as he studied her closer. “What’s wrong?”

She wanted to run to him, bury her face against his chest and cry her heart out. But she wouldn’t, for several reasons. One, the reason for her distress was none of his business or concern. Second, there was nothing he could do to help. And finally, she was falling for the man and any direct contact with him was dangerous and would jeopardize her heart.
